Fully-Funded PhD Opportunity at Dublin City University

Are you passionate about energy justice, citizen science, and just transitions—and eager to investigate pressing energy and climate issues in social housing? We’re excited to announce a fully funded PhD student researcher position for the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI)-funded SHINE project. SHINE is a four-year interdisciplinary collaboration between the School of Law and Government and the School of Electronic Engineering at Dublin City University.

As a SHINE PhD researcher, you’ll play a vital role in exploring how social housing residents engage with just transitions, national clean energy, and climate goals, all while working alongside a dynamic interdisciplinary team.

What we’re looking for:

We are seeking a motivated researcher who is excited to bridge the worlds of social sciences, public policy, housing, and technology. Ideal applicants will have a background in political science, public policy, sociology, human geography, education, OR/AND engineering, data science, or environmental science, sustainable systems, and a strong interest in social justice and positive societal impact. We welcome applications from candidates with a Bachelor’s degree (required); a Master’s degree is desirable but not required.

Research focus:

The successful candidate will contribute to cutting-edge research on socio-technical policy and governance. Potential research themes include:

  • Policy design and implementation
  • Citizen engagement and participation
  • Housing and technological systems
  • The use of citizen science data to inform national housing strategies and influence household energy behaviours

What you’ll get:

  • A stipend of €25,000 per annum
  • Tuition fees covered (up to non-EU rate)
  • A supportive, collaborative research environment based in Dublin for four years
